Bellycasting

Bellycasting done by Annie CagleA belly cast is a pleasurable, creative and fun way to explore your pregnancy and delight in the changes taking place in your body as you create new life. Unlike photographs, a belly cast is a three dimensional piece of art which captures all of your pregnancy curves. This is a wonderful time to connect with your baby, reflect on your pregnancy and look forward to the future. No other medium captures this intimate experience between a mother and her child the way a belly cast can.

A belly cast, sometimes called a belly mask, is literally a plaster cast of your pregnant body. Belly casting is done in the privacy of your home, usually as a single final casting between 34 - 36 weeks of pregnancy.  This is a time in which your baby is generally still high, has not dropped and your belly size is at its fullest.  Castings can also be done as a package to show the progression of your belly size and shape over the course of the entire pregnancy.
We bring all the needed materials to complete the initial casting, which is usually done in an hours time and you choose the pose and finishing style.

The prices vary based on pose and finishing style.  Offered are 3 different styles of the most popular belly castings.  Other custom styles may be available.

Style 1:  This style is referred to as a “raw” or a basic finish.  We will cast your belly and other body parts.  The cast will dry on your body for a short time and then we will remove it.  We will provide minimal strengthening after it has been removed from your body.  This style is complete at this stage.  This cast will be rough and unfinished and left with you to finish as you would like.  A finishing kit is available for an additional charge.

Style 2: This style is referred to as an enhanced finish. After completion of the basic finish we will then carefully pack your casting and bring it to our work studio to complete this style.  We will further strengthen all areas of the casting.  We will finish off the edges of the casting to leave it with a more defined and rounded edge.  We will further detail areas such as the bellybutton, arms and hands.  Your casting will generally be returned to you within two weeks.

Style 3:  This style is referred it as a premium finish.  After completion of the enhanced finish we will then add a bonding material to your casting.  The bonding material will further strengthen the casting.  A combination of several coats of bonding material and several sandings will provide a smooth finish on the casting.  Coatings of a basecoat white as well as a sealer will be applied to your casting.  Your casting will generally be returned to you within three weeks.

The castings can be propped against a wall, mounted into a frame or laid on a flat surface.

Our castings are unique as we:

  • Only use medical grade plaster, a safer alternative to the artist grade plaster some use.
  • Generally have a primary belly caster and an assistant present, limiting the time it takes to make your casting.Bellycasting done by Annie Cagle
  • Use extra plaster in order to strengthening your casting so it may be a sturdy keepsake for time to come.
  • Bring years of experience, first in making Mardi Gras face masks in Louisiana and later expanding to belly castings in Louisiana and more recently now in New Hampshire, providing a casting done right for you the first time.
  • Provide you free of charge with ideas on decorating the casting or provide you with information on artists we have made special arrangements with to paint our castings, if you so desire this additional service.

Belly casts also make a unique and wonderful gift.  Gift certificates are available by contacting us.
